Identification | Hypoptopoma sp. `PERU(2)` is similar to, and may represent nothing more than a color variation of, Hypoptopoma sp. `PERU(1)`, but differs in several ways. Compared to Hypoptopoma sp. `PERU(1)`, this fish has a body color pattern with more of a pale saddles-on-dark background appearance (vs. alternating light and dark vertical stripes), very small dark spots on the dorsal spine and upper & lower caudal spines (vs larger spots on the spines), two connecting vertical bands forming an X- or H-shaped dark pattern on the caudal peduncle (vs. one broad vertical band on the caudal peduncle with faint pale spots on the dorsal and ventral margins of the band), and a more pale saddle above the head, anterior to the dorsal spine. Furthermore, this fish has a pale belly. |
